THE COMPLETE UPPER QUADRANT 2017

This course encompasses the differential diagnosis, assessment and management of the cervical spine and shoulder.

It integrates research evidence with best clinical practice and was designed to improve participants’ ability to differentially diagnose contributing mechanisms and impairments in patients presenting with pain in the upper quadrant, with consideration of cervical, neural and shoulder structures.

A  broader range of clinical examination techniques and advanced clinical reasoning and management options were covered.

•  Improve their skills and competence in the assessment of the cervical spine with emphasis on the assessment of pain from cervical musculoskeletal (articular and motor) structures.

•  Improve their skills and differential diagnosis for the assessment of upper limb neurological conduction deficit and mechanosensitivity in the patient with neurally mediated pain.

•  Improve their ability to accurately establish whether the shoulder primarily contributes to a patient’s presentation, including consideration of the sources of pain within the gleno-humeral joint, subacromial space and acromioclavicular joint, rotator cuff control and scapular dyskinesia.

•  Discuss and integrate the principles of contemporary pain management for upper quadrant disorders.

Complex cases were used to illustrate the clinical reasoning processes that determine whether the primary pain contribution is cervical, shoulder or neuromeningeal in origin.
